The Long Soft Centre
New: a trio of cushions in mini-me renditions of Penta, Tefnut and Oxbow.
The excellent Douglas Mackie – interior designer of great refinement and cosmopolitan taste – tipped me off a year ago that he and his industry peers favoured long cushions. Hmm. Others, including Russell Pinch, in whose shop I exhibited for London Craft Week two years back, had also suggested that cushions might be a useful, entry-level product. But patchwork cushions? I asked myself with a sigh. Must it come to that?
And yet, as I finished the first Pemberton Edition, Oxbow, I realised that the design at about 1:3 scale would make an excellent long cushion. I followed suit for Tefnut, and then figured out how many irregular pentagons I could tessellate into my 70x40 cushion cover dimensions for a Penta. The answer is 13; here they are.
These dimensions accommodate a standard (bed) pillow, or two if you like a firm, well-stuffed cushion. Use a Superking (King in the US), as we did in our photographs, and your cushion will never sag or need puffing up. The cushion covers are quilted on the front by topstitching either side of the seams, plain on the back and finished with a zip.
A long cushion will contribute pleasingly to the massing of cushion shapes on your sofa, and occupy the central spot with perfect elegance. Eight are now available in the shop.
Other designs and colours will follow, especially by popular request, so don’t hold back your thoughts.
